The private sector contributes significantly to the Jiangsu economy. There are 20.044 million people engaged in private enterprise and individual businesses. The private economy sector contributed 2.57676 trillion RMB in 2011, accounting for 53% of the province`s GDP. Jiangsu entrepreneurs are key drivers in the Jiangsu economic transformation.
Jiangsu entrepreneurs can be broadly divided into two types, Jiangnan and Jiangbei. Most Jiangbei entrepreneurs are frank and candid, and Jiangnan entrepreneurs have a calm and introverted disposition. As can be seen through the economic development of South and North China, Jiangsu entrepreneurs are hardworking, bold, and have sharp business acumen. Most are small and medium family businesses. Although the management team are typically not highly educated., they are earnest in learning and work hard to gain external recognition and support. They also believe that “harmony brings wealth” and adopt a moderate business style. Jiangsu entrepreneurs focus on the long-term plan and also on current interests. Compared with Zhejiang entrepreneurs, Jiangsu businessmen and government have a closer relationship although the influence of state policy is not obvious. Jiangsu entrepreneurs are enthusiastic in adopting science and technology innovations and are fairly bold in venturing into new business opportunities. There are a number of public-listed technology firms in Jiangsu. The Chinese government are also extremely supportive of Jiangsu entrepreneurs, in terms of tax incentives and fostering a pro-business environment.
In a nutshell, Jiangsu merchants are astute, sociable and adventurous.Even though there has been occasional criticism that Jiangsu entrepreneurs tend to neglect corporate social responsibility and that the scale of Jiangsu businesses are still small, the quality of Jiangsu entrepreneurs have improved significantly on both fronts in recent years. In short, Jiangsu entrepreneurs are generally trustworthy business partners.
